In The Spotlight- SEW DARN CUTE

Hello! I am Jessica, I am the mother of three beautiful little girls and the wife to one hot husband. I LOVE Sewing, Crafting, Planning Parties, Holidays and all things DIY. (Do It Yourself) I have a problem, I see something I love and think to myself, “self, you have to try and make that!” Sometimes it is to save money and sometimes I do it for the challenge. When I get a project in this little head of mine it CONSUMES me until I get a chance to complete it. I feel like I need a support group!

I actually blog in my spare time! My priorities are caring for my little munchkins, our home, and spending time with my husband. Then I MAKE time to sew and craft and IF there is time left over, I blog about it. My blog is more a documentation of my many projects. Basically I craft and sew for fun, I craft and sew for me, but I do not craft and sew just to have something to blog about. I feel humbled and surprised that I even have followers on my blog, I am such a blog slacker!

Since most of my life plans end up different than I imagine, I don’t dare say where I would like to be in 5 years! I hope I still get to stay home with my kids, and sew for them. I would like to become a better photographer. I guess it would help if I knew how to use my camera on any mode but Auto! A life goal would be to design children’s clothing either working for a children’s clothing company, or having my own little line. I would also love to go to fashion design school, maybe once my kids are all grown!

You may not believe me but I didn’t always like to sew. My mom taught me to sew when I was young; but I wasn’t ever too interested in it. My Mom made a lot of my clothes growing up. She enjoyed making us kids matching outfits, and all of our Halloween costumes. She is an amazing seamstress. I took a few sewing classes in High School, but did not want to use my spare time for sewing. Sewing took too much patience for me! I never wanted to unpick anything, and cutting out fabric was annoying! (Heck, it still is!)

When I was pregnant with my oldest I started seeing all kinds of girlie things I wanted to have for my baby, but I knew I couldn’t have them all on a college students budget. I decided to try and make some of those things. I felt satisfaction and fulfilment when I finished a project. I realized I loved to sew! I changed my major to home and family living, which meant classes on textiles, sewing, pattern making and fashion design. My daughters are my inspiration, they started all this sewing maddness. It helps that they love wearing the things I make for them, which makes the unpicked seams, and cutting out worth it. It also feeds my obsession with Fabric. I hoard it. Hopefully it will only over take the closet in our spare room and not my life!

5 Random things about me:
When I eat a Three Musketeer or a Milky Way I peel off the chocolate and eat it first, I then eat the filling.
I like Cheesy girly movies… old school Mary Kate and Ashley, Twilight, Ella Enchanted, Disney movies, or just about any chick flick with a happy ending. I don’t like movies or shows that bring me down, Elle Woods has always been my hero!
I REALLY like watching sports. I like watching them live, or on the television. My favorites are Football and Baseball. My Teams are the Boise State Broncos, BYU Cougars, and the San Francisco Giants.
3 Words: Tim Tam Slam
I enjoy reality television, but not your average reality television. I love those cake shows, cupcake shows, and basically any food television. Man vs Food? Can I please be Adam Richmond for a day?!

Head on over to her blog www.justsewdarncute.blogspot.com and check out all the adorable things she makes.  Everything from blessing dresses from an old wedding dress to car seat covers.  She is amazing and you will love all her crafty ideas!  Thanks for being our spotlight for the week :)

In the Spotlight!

Hi! My name is Shauna. I am a wife of a fantastic and supportive husband, and a mother to two, Jude is 4 and Abbey is 2, and one of the women behind Shwin&Shwin. I love that I get to stay home and play with them each day since they are constantly inspiring me. To say I love to sew is a bit of an understatement. I can not live without it would be closer.

I sew something everyday. It is my release. I learned to sew when I was little since my mom sewed all the time but then I grew up got married and really didn't sew much. I made a few things when here and there but I had a pretty cheap and horrible sewing machine and it took all the fun out of sewing. Then I found myself with two kids, and that was seriously my identity.

I was a mom and nothing more.

It had been so long since I had worked, or had a hobby, or done anything for myself. So I decided to sew. My grandma gave me her beautiful and fabulous sewing machine and serger and I never looked back.

It gave me a part of me back, a part of my own identity and something that I could be proud of. I loved when I would be out with my kids and someone would compliment something my kids were wearing and I would smile knowing I made that!

Q: Apart from your blog, what do you do?

Aside from the blog I have the fantastic job of doing whatever I want! Ok maybe more like whatever the 4 year old wants cause he is the boss. ha! Somedays we are running for our lives protecting the world from evil fighting bad guys in the backyard, and somedays we are hiding from fire breathing dragon while rescuing the princess from the tower. Everyday is a wild adventure! Then when the kids go down to bed I soak up some alone time and fit in some time to work for my parents as a web developer/ head of marketing. It's fun to be creative and reach out and connect with others.

Q: Where would you like to be in five years?

In five years I would love to be doing what I am doing now. I seriously love everything that I do and I wouldn't want anything to change, I would love to know that in 5 years I can still be sewing and creating things my children like. I would like to find a way to convince my husband to travel more with me, especially without the kids along. SO I guess I will add that to my 5 year plan. There's always hoping right? ha!

Little Man Shoes

Q: Tell us how you got started with Shwin and Shwin:

Shwin and Shwin started from a conversation I had with my sister. We lived across the country from each other and so we would just talk on the phone about projects or ideas we had and then text pictures back and forth. It wasn't a very good system. So we decided to start a blog so we had a better way of sharing with each other, and anyone else that wanted to know. So for a name, we thought it was easy. We are both Shwins. It's our nickname. To each other and what our family calls us. The story of how it all began is a bit long, but let's just say it started with a lie, and then it stuck. The best thing is everyone in our family always knows which "Shwin" you are talking about. So we went with that. It wasn't until after we started the blog that I discovered there was a whole world of craft blogs. Which is amazing! I have learned so much, improved so much and been so inspired by so many blogs. It's been a crazy and amazing year and I have loved every minute!

Abbey Jacket Pattern

Q: Anything fun and exciting you would like to share? New product? Goal met for your blog?

I have had a long time goal of making patterns. I love making children's clothing and making designs. I love even more making my own patterns! I finally created my first multiple size PDF pattern and it felt amazing to be done. It's also quite addicting so I am making like 10 more at the moment.

Q: 5 things we don't know about you:

1: I am seriously addicted to Pretty Little Liars the TV show. It is so sad. The show was created for 13 year olds I am sure and yet it has me by it's grip. I watch it online, because my husband laughs at me when he sees it on the DVR.

2. For most my life I aspired to be a writer and I have a few published short stories and several half written screen plays for the "when I have time" pile. I still love making up stories for my kids.

3. I don't do laundry. Yep lucky for me I married a man who does do laundry or we would have nothing to wear. When I was single and living on my own I literally went shopping for new clothes over doing laundry. It was pathetic. I just really hate the sorting and the washing then the drying and don't get me started on the folding and putting away.

4.I hate static shock. So much so that I am very OCD about how I open and close metal doors. I don't know where it comes from really, it's not like it hurts, and you have never heard of someone dying over static shock, but still OCD is there.

5. I love traffic. Don't get me wrong if I were in some sort of emergency I would probably have a heart attack from the stress of the traffic but I honestly love sitting in traffic. I find it somewhat peaceful. (just don't cut in front of me ha!)

Thanks Amanda for this fun interview! I love taking the chance to meet new people! Stop by the blog and say Hi!

What I made

I did it!  I finally did it!  I decided I wanted to make the girls a couple matching skirts they could play in.  I wanted something very simple and decided to start out with this easy little skirt.  I am not a huge fan of sewing...... it takes SOOO long.  I figured that was a horrible excuse.  Next skirt will have pockets and in Christmas colors.  I am excited to get started.  What did you make this weekend?
